Post-Service Learning Reflections

If someone wants to be a doctor or a lawyer we automatically know that it will take a lot of time and education before they become professionals. What people tend to look past is that no matter what job you have its always important to have great dedication and willingness towards expanding and completing your education. Whether it be anything from a community college to going for a doctorates degree, you should do whatever it takes to farther your education in the career that you wish to have.

All that I have ever wanted to do as a career is play music, and when I think back on what I have done take my knowledge of music to the next level its almost crazy. Ever since I was a child I have been striving to learn more about music, so when I had the chance I did all that I could to learn about music. I then started to learn to play different instruments, everything from the drums to the piano and just a few years ago I picked up the guitar and basically taught myself how to play. I think that the more that I have learned about music the more that it has pushed my drive to learn about music, and this has greatly affected my look and opinions on music. When we had the career expo for the incoming 9th graders, I not only taught them a few things but I learned a few things myself. For one I learned that you cant teach someone anything if they aren't interested on what your teaching. The other thing I learned is that if you don't have an interest in something that you are doing research on the facts and information you retrieve probably wont be the best or even correct because you didn't have motivation into the subject.

I think that if someone is truly dedicated to a career, like me, they should do all that they can possibly do to expand their education in the field their looking into. If someone hasn't quite found something that they are truly dedicated to I think that they should defiantly look around because there are tons of programs and learning services to all sorts of different careers that are available today. Now the question is what do you want to do and what are you going to do to strengthen your education?

Pre-Service Learning Reflections

Have you ever been mind-set on a job or career that you absolutely wanted? Have you ever found yourself saying that you would do whatever it  would take to have that certain job or career? If you said yes, are you currently doing everything you can to help yourself get that job or career? There are hundreds of different programs, associations, scholarships and other ways that are out there to help people obtain there dream. When you put dedication and hard work into your education it will greatly increase the chances of not only your dreams to get your career, but it will greatly increase the chance of people wanting to help you reach your dreams.

It has always been my dream to be a rock star. Although I know that its a very slim chance that I will be able to become a musician and make a living from it, I still put great amounts of dedication and effort into playing, writing and making music everyday. I play music because its not only a passion of mine, but because its a great way to share your thoughts and ideas. Even if I'm not able to make a living of music or even start a band, I will still play music everyday and put all my effort and dedication into it. I think that I have such dedication to my dream because I'm so heavily influenced by music and its been something that has always been a part of my life and its the one thing I can always relate to. I think why I put so much time into trying to achieve rock stardom is the fact that my family and friends, epically my dad, uncle and grandfather, have always been in a band and I idolize theses people like I idolize the rock stars everyone knows and loves, and they have always encouraged me to play and chase my dreams.

I think that if someone really puts all there time, effort and dedication into a certain goal, they can achieve their goal no matter how difficult it might be. Too many people now a days give up to easily because they actually have to try to get something they want, and its these people who we hear complaining about things in the world that are wrong and life is to hard and all that other nonsense. When I hear these people I think about what I would be like, and what my life would be like, if I wouldn't have dedication or a will to try for my dreams. I don't think life could enjoyable if you didn't give a shot at your hopes and dreams, I mean whats the point of life if you don't want to do anything with it? I guess people are just to scared at failing or being criticized for what they do, I think that if you try your hardest and still fail you can at least look back and say that you tried to do something.

Personal Statement #1

If there was any one person that I would say that I relate to the most, it would defiantly be my Grandpa Gil. Whenever I think back on a memory there always seem to somehow be a way my grandfather relates to or was actually there, whether it was a good time or a time where I learned something new or even if it was just something small that I remember he always seems to be a part of it. Throughout my life I have learned many things from my grandfather from how to re-build a car to re-building a house and many other things that will eventually come into use in life.

My grandfather has helped me in so many different ways in life that its overwhelming when I begin to even think about it, he has done everything and more help me expand my knowledge and skills. Some of the things he has taught me I use in everyday situations, and really help me throughout the day in communicating and interacting with people. He has also taught me almost everything about music, musical gear and has given me the chance to experience setting up a sound and light show for bands. I have been setting up the shows with him since 2005 and he has taught me everything down to the littlest things about the gear to managing, business deals and how to fix any of the gear. Music has always been a big thing in life for me and my grandfather was one of the first people to show me different bands and different types of music. He is always showing me new music and new gear that he wants to get or thinks that I would like and I really appreciate that he does that for me.

I can always count on my grandfather for anything when I'm in need of something whether be advice, help or just someone to talk to my grandfather is always there. He has inspired me so much to be like him and always be there for people when they are in need and always willing to lend a helping hand to people.
My grandfather and I have had tons of time to connect and through all the time I have realized that my grandfather and I share many of the same values and skills, then I realized that everything we had in common had come from him and I just picked them up.

I believe that connecting with people, family or not, is one of the greatest things that we can do as a society. Some of the people that I have been able to connect with over the years have truly affected how I look on certain things now, and I feel that without them that I wouldn't be as well rounded of a person as I am today. These people have also helped me through the toughest of times, and have showed me new things in the world that I never thought I would be able to experience. But if there is ever one person that really stands out in my head who I feel that I have connected to the most, and that I relate to the most, its my grandpa Gil.

The First Week Of College

Well as we all know there were only a few classes to choose from to take during our program, Political Science, History, English and Art. I was one of the three that was chosen to take art. I looked and read up on all the classes during orientation and the only class that truly interested me was the art class. Its not that I didn't want to do the work that I knew came along with the other classes, its just that the other classes didn't quite grab my attention as much as the art class did. I also didn't really myself enjoying the other classes because I am pretty imaginative, or I like to be anyways, and the other classes were just straight forward work and I don't care to much for that especially when I have a choice to do something that I like. So far class has gone very well and I feel very comfortable in the environment. The professor is very down to earth and very easy to get along with and so far I feel I'm going to do very well in this class. As for College 101 i'm really not shure exactly what this class is all about, I mean why do we have to do these blogs? And what are these blogs even about, are they gonna use these for something or are we just doing it for fun?

Other than College 101 this program so far has been really good and I think it will give me a good idea what to expect and also give me ideas on what I want to do later in life. This program is also helping me see the transition from high school to college, but so far I haven't seen to much of a difference other than a few small things. The few things that I did notice is that the professor in your class really doesn't care what you do and they aren't going to tell you what to do either, another thing is that everything you do is very independent and no ones going to tell you whether to do it or if its a good idea or not. There night be other personal changes for people but to me college is just a more independent and way more expensive high school.

I think that if I do decide to go to college it will be a very good experience for me that will not only help me grow in my education but also help me grow as a person. Most people say that college is the final step form being a teenager to becoming an adult, from going to the child with little plans and much guidance to the adult with a life plan and  a goal, setting out to go on there own and make a living for themselves and the families they start. I think that most people have some sort of dream they wish to accomplish after high school and college, so far mine is pretty small, but at least its a start.

Scott Residence Hall

First of all to be truthfully honest when I found out that I was going to be staying at Scott Hall for a week with a group of total strangers I wanted to have no part in the whole thing, but thinking about it now and all the experiences I had, I have absolutely changed my mind and have no regrets about going. I haven't really experienced anything quite like what I did while staying there, from walking sixty feet in the air on a tight rope at the High Ropes course to running just in socks accost a college campus for an hour to going completely insane and having a huge water fight and opening up to complete strangers and playing pool and having a good time until three in the morning. One really big thing for me was actually interacting with people and making a couple friends, and to be honest I didn't go to make friends or meet people but I saw that people actually wanted to get to know me and I opened up and met some really cool and interesting people.

But we aren't just here to have fun and play games, we are here cause we want to get ahead of the game and see what college is going to be like. So far I really haven't made up my mind on what I want to do with my life. Should I go to college and get a four year degree? Should I just go through high school, graduate, get a job and live life? Maybe community college? Or maybe I should go see what Uncle Sam wants to do with me. I don't know but then again I don't think anyone knows that's the thing about life, its completely unpredictable and sometimes it just doesn't go the way you want it to. But there is something that I do know from being in this program, if you try hard enough and give it your all only the best of good things could happen for you. And if your willing to try new things and make sacrifices people are willing to give you a chance and make sacrifices for you.

I think that living at Scott Hall and experiencing what I have made me see that what the Summer Scholars program is doing is trying to set the stage for a group of kids ready to go out in the world and take chances and make sacrifices and do all they can do to succeed, and maybe with some help from a few friends and R.T.As I can find out what I want to do with my life so I can finally get somewhere and not have to worry about troubled times ahead of me.
